Partial Eclipse of the Moon, Hawaii

This was one of three celestial lineups, or syzygies, to occur during my 2012 US tour. The first was an annular eclipse of the Sun on 20 May which I viewed from Bryce Canyon in Utah; the third was a transit of Venus on 5 June, viewed from Hawaii.

This eclipse was sandwiched between those two more spectacular events, on the night of 3-4 June.  Being a partial eclipse, the Earth’s shadow only partly covered the lunar disk. It was still worth seeing though and the photo displays the size of the Earth’s shadow compared with the Moon.

Imaged through a Meade ED5000 80mm f/6 refractor with a Nikon D700 DSLR. 1/750 second exposure at ISO-400.
